SHAPES is a software and hardware solution designed to provide advanced tools to health care professionals to evaluate a patient’s physical performance. We use everyday consumer electronics, the Microsoft Kinect, and custom software to achieve this goal. SHAPES provides instruction on how to perform exercises, evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness during training and saves the training measurements for analysis.

SHAPES can be used by Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Personal Trainers to provide the most effective training at home, remotely or in an unattended training facility. It is simple enough to use so anyone can perform exercises in their homes.

This system allows a clinician to record multiple full bodied motion capture session as a model for patient exercises. The recorded sessions can be used for multiple patients or can be recorded for individual patients. This recorded session is then played back for the patient to perform, while simultaneously capturing their performance characteristics. During playback and performance, SHAPES provides real-time feedback on the patient’s accuracy in completing the exercise and stores activity data for later analysis.

This will allow both patient and clinicians to track progress toward a goal, and identify areas of difficulty in performing exercises. By providing real-time accuracy feedback, SHAPES will ensure that the patient understands the exercise they are performing and can immediately correct improper form. This feedback will aide in patient compliance with exercises to aide in reaching their goals.

What can SHAPES do?

When you use SHAPES as a clinician, you will have the ability to record a custom exercise for your patients. These exercises can be recorded once and shared among many patients. This allows you to begin building up a library of usefull and common exercises, but still be able to provide truly customized experiences for each patient. As you record your exercise, you will see yourself and your movements on the screen. This will be how the patient sees you during the exercise.

Once you record and exercise, you can then select how the exercies will be scored. If you want to focus on particular limbs in an exercise, you can select them, and all other parts won't be factored into the score. These can be changed on a per patient need. Also, if you are recording a repetitious exercise, you can record a single repetition, and let SHAPES deal with the rest.

Once you have recorded and assigned an exercise, the patient can then watch the exercise as many times as they like. They can also perform with the exercise. On the screen, they will see your recording and they will mirror it's actions. Since we are using the Kinect, we can tell if what the patient does matches up with the recording. If the patient isn't moving correctly with the exercise, we can highlight that part of the body in real time to alert them to their movements.

Upon completion of the exercise, the patient will recieve an overall score to tell them how well they performed the exercise. SHAPES will capture the Date and Time the patient performed the exercise, along with their score. This allows you and the patient to easily determine how they are progressing over time.
